You need a valid prescription from a licensed physician.
Since April 1, 2024, both general practitioners and specialists
(with the exception of dentists and veterinarians) are authorized to prescribe medical cannabis—either via statutory insurance or as a private prescription. With this prescription, you can purchase medical cannabis at a pharmacy.
Alternatively, telemedicine platforms offer a convenient and fast digital service, providing consultation, prescription issuance, and delivery or pharmacy pickup.
In Germany, all physicians – except dentists – are legally permitted to prescribe medical cannabis. However, not every doctor actively does so, as experience with cannabis-based treatments and openness to this therapy can vary from practice to practice.
A good starting point is to speak with your general practitioner. If they do not have experience in prescribing medical cannabis, specialists such as pain physicians, neurologists, or palliative care doctors are often more familiar with this type of therapy and may provide further support.
Telemedicine platforms offer an additional, convenient option. They allow for remote consultations via video, and if you meet the medical criteria, a prescription can be issued online.
Medical cannabis is available exclusively in pharmacies. Either with a statutory or private prescription, or through telemedicine providers that issue online prescriptions and collaborate with pharmacies.
There are many different strains of medical cannabis, each with varying THC and CBD levels and different therapeutic effects. Which strain is suitable for you depends on your condition and symptoms.
Cannabis affects everyone differently, so it’s normal for treatment to take some time until the right strain is identified. During this adjustment phase, it is helpful to stay in close contact with your treating physician and your pharmacy.
